CANDLE CARE
Candle How To:
1. Trim your wick to about 5mm before lighting each time. This can be done by simply pinching off any blackened ash to light the fresh wood underneath (check fresh wood height is no more than 5mm) or using wick trimmers or nail clippers.
If you notice a larger than-normal flame height (6cm plus) or a large flickering or smoking flame during any period of burning your candle you should extinguish the flame, trim the wick to 5mm, and relight.
2. Tilt the candle at a 45-degree angle and let the flame draw across the length of the wick, you will need to hold the flame to the wick for around 15-20 seconds to establish a strong flame.
3. Burn the wood wick candle until the top surface of the wax has melted evenly to the edge of the jar before extinguishing. this may take between 30 minutes to three hours after lighting. A full pool of melted wax will keep the candle from tunnelling or leaving wax on the sides of the vessel.
We recommend burning your candle to full melt during every use and extinguishing it when you have a 2cm deep liquid pool. If the full melt is reached every burn each full melt will become quicker. Once your candle wax has reached the halfway point we suggest your burn times decrease by about an hour.
4. Do not burn past recommended burn times of 3-4 hours (see label).
5. Discontinue the use of the candle when
10mm of wax remains or steel tab is visible.
5. Clean jar ready for refill candle. How to clean here.
Candle Safety
- The container may become hot when burning.
- Never move a burning candle. Allow to cool after extinguishing before touching.
- Place on a heat-resistant surface.
- Never leave a burning candle unattended, near pets or children.
- Keep away from combustibles, draughts, vibrations, or anything that may be flammable.
- Keep the wax pool free of debris.
- Burn for periods of no more than 3-4 hours.
- Discontinue the use of the candle when 10mm of wax remains or the steel tab is visible.
- Do not position candles or fragrance products on or near electrical appliances, TV cabinets, or, any secondary heat source.
- Never burn candles on a shelf with another shelf above eg. inside a bookcase.
- Discard container candles if the jar is cracked, chipped, or broken.
- Never pour wax down a drain – where it’ll likely clog your pipes.
- Never extinguish a candle flame with water.
Refill How To:
1. Clean your original glassware after finishing your candle.
2. Peel the top sticker tabs off the base of the refill. These tabs need to be stuck to the glassware to ensure the wicks do not move while in use.
3. Place your refill inside your used jar. Each candle refill has been carefully moulded to ONLY fit the shape of our Stump and Co jars and may not fit other jars or canisters.
4. Light your refill by following our candle care instructions in the Candle How To selection.
Refill Candle Safety
Do not light refill without placing it inside your clean Stump and Co glassware. Refill candles must not be burnt (used) outside of the original Stump and Co glassware. They are not pillar candles and should not be used as such. Discontinue the use of the original jar if it is damaged, cracking, or faulty.
Never pour wax down a drain – where it’ll likely clog your pipes. Pour into a handful of paper towels or a recyclable bag. Place waste in your red wheelie bin.
Common Wick Issues
- Large flame height. Commonly caused by an incorrect wick length of over 5mm before lighting. If you notice a larger than normal flame height (6-7cm plus) during any period of burning your candle you should extinguish the flame, trim the wick to 5mm, and relight.
- Smoky flame. If you notice a smoky flame. There is too much ash build up. Extinguish the flame, trim the wick to 5mm, and relight.
- Wicks drowning from a sinkhole or tunneling see here.
Candles in Beer Cans
HOT TIP – We recommend using extra long matches or butane lighter for ease of lighting.
1. Follow all Candle How To Steps on this page. The recommended burn time for this product is a maximum of 3 hours.
2. When finished place in freezer to remove wax and wick tab. Wash in warm water and remove the label or use this kettle method here. Never pour wax down a drain – where it’ll likely clog your pipes. Pour melted wax into a handful of paper towels or a recyclable bag. Place waste in your red wheelie bin.
3. Clean aluminum cans can be recycled via most curbside and drop-off recycling centers.
In the rare event of a wax pool fire, do not touch or move the candle. Treat wax pool fire as an oil or grease fire by starving the flame of oxygen. The use of a powder extinguisher or fire blanket is preferable.
If these are not an option a large quantity of pure sand or baking soda can be used. The use of a stainless-steel pot or pan’s flat base can be placed over the burning candle to create an airtight seal and suffocate the flame.
How to extinguish:
- Cover with a fire blanket or powder extinguisher
- Cover with a large quantity of pure sand or baking soda.
- Cover with a fire-resistant material eg. steel, or metal.
- Cover with a oven safe product like a stainless steel pot, pan, or tray. Use the flat surface to suffocate the flame by placing it over the top of the candle’s opening or use the open side of a pot to completely cover the whole candle and suffocate the flame.
- Cover with a large quantity of pure sand or baking soda.
What NOT to do:
- Do not pick up or move the candle.
- NEVER put out a wax pool fire with water! This will cause the ignited wax to spread, splatter, and glass can crack.
- NEVER attempt to blow it out. This will fan the flame.
- Never use flour. This will add fuel to the flame.
ALWAYS follow the safety and care instructions on this page. Also can be found on the base of our candles or on the label.
WAX POOL FIRE
In the rare event of a wax pool fire, do not touch or move the candle. Treat wax pool fire as an oil or grease fire by starving the flame of oxygen. The use of a powder extinguisher or fire blanket is preferable.
If these are not an option, a large quantity of pure sand or baking soda can be poured onto the flame. The flat side of a stainless steel pot, tray, or pan can be placed over the burning candle’s opening to create an airtight seal and suffocate the flame. Alternatively place the open side of a stainless steel pot to completely cover the candle and suffocate the flame.
How to extinguish:
- Fire blanket or powder extinguisher
- Cover with a fire-resistant material eg. steel, or metal. Use the flat surface to suffocate the flame.
- Cover with an oven-safe product like a stainless steel pot, pan, or tray.
- NEVER put out a candle fire with water! This will cause the ignited wax to spread, hot wax to splatter, and glass can crack.
- NEVER attempt to blow it out. This will fan the flame.
- NEVER use flour. This will add fuel to the flame.
ALWAYS follow the safety and care instructions of our candles to avoid wax pool fires. These can be found on the base of our candles or on the label.
CAUSES:
Wax pool fires are commonly caused by burning past recommended times, not trimming wicks to the correct 5mm height, and candle burn acceleration. If your wick’s height is incorrect you will see a larger than normal flame height, which is anything above 6cm. This flame is likely to flicker or smoke. Extinguish the flame, trim the wick to 5mm, and relight.
Burn acceleration from long wick height, draughts, and candle sweating from incorrect storage temperatures or exposure to direct sunlight.
FIX sweating: If you see sweating on your candle use hair drying to remelt the top layer of the candle or use paper towel to wipe sweat from the hardened wax top.
